SAFETY

Safety will always be our priority at Tarmac, and we are constantly striving to improve our safety record. Across our operations in 2025, we had a Total Recordable Case Frequency Rate (TRCFR) of 0.14 incidents for every million hours worked, and a Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) of 0.05 for every 100,000 hours.

Tarmac’s ongoing drive for continuous improvement in health and safety was demonstrated in 2025 through participation in CRH’s Safety Best Practice events, with Tarmac attendance expanding to over 150 employees. The events are designed to showcase safety best practice and enable colleagues to collaborate on solutions to key health and safety problems and leverage the global knowledge of the wider CRH business. Collaboration and best practice sharing is an essential activity to reduce incidents, mitigate risks and deliver on our Zero Harm objective.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

It is important for Tarmac to demonstrate that we are an organisation and employer who cares. Safety is our number one priority alongside a commitment to support our employees to have good wellbeing, helping our teams stay healthy, stay safe, and perform at their best at work and outside of work. We want our people to be comfortable talking about safety, health and wellbeing without stigma or prejudice, and to be able to support those around them who may need help.

ENHANCING POSITIVE WELLBEING

A key objective for Tarmac is ensuring that our colleagues and employees feel that they work in an organisation that promotes and demonstrates a culture of positive wellbeing. This enables them to feel supported, informed and energised to perform at their best. As a community, we have the opportunity to support the positive wellbeing of not just our colleagues but also their families and the contractors we work closely with.

A standout example of this in 2025 was a Contractor Safety Forum held at our Stancombe Quarry. Interactive sessions were held which allowed Tarmac employees and contractors to ‘see’ safety in different perspectives within the environment we work, such as contractors sitting in dumpers to see through the eyes of our operators. Our Cement and Packed products team hosted senior leaders from our third-party hauliers to share safety information and best practice, reviewing incidents, driver welfare, observation reporting, and future safety plans.

MENTAL WELLBEING

When it comes to mental wellbeing, it matters to Tarmac to grow a community of support across the business and beyond. This means keeping a focus on mental health throughout the year, and ensuring we regularly signpost the resources available to Tarmac employees.

In May, we took time to focus on Mental Health Awareness Week, supporting our colleagues to understand the resources available from our employee assistance programme, health and wellbeing community, and our mental health first aiders. As one of the first industry supporters in 2018, our partnership with Mates in Mind continued throughout 2025 and we now have 162 active mental health first aiders within the business.

In September, we observed World Suicide Prevention Day; in October, we ran wellbeing conversations through our colleague communities; and in November, we focused on Men’s Health Awareness Month. This coincided with recognition from Band of Builders with a Community Impact Award, celebrating the contribution that Tarmac has made to the construction community and the mission of Band of Builders.

PHYSICAL WELLBEING

The link between physical wellbeing and mental wellbeing is well understood along with the benefits it brings. As one of the many activities that were happening during Mental Health Awareness Week, May saw the opening of Tarmac’s on-site gym at our Mountsorrel office, The Hub.With weights, resistance bands, yoga mats, running machines and spin bikes, it presents a real opportunity for colleagues to take time out to exercise and support their own wellbeing.

Tarmac staff can realise additional benefits through our ongoing partnership with YuLife, our employee wellbeing app. Completing physical and mental tasks such as daily walks, meditations and sudoku challenges allows employees to gain YuCoin that can be converted into vouchers to be used at different retailers or to support important causes and charities. Across the business, 65% of employees have signed up to the YuLife app, with employees taking on average 7,064 steps per day and completing 21 workouts per month.

We are delighted that in 2025, Tarmac colleagues have used YuLife to generously donate to:

  • Big Blue Clean Up supporting the removal of 207kg of plastic from the ocean
  • Earthly who planted 3,020 trees
  • Charity: water who distributed 1,468,262 litres of clean water to families
  • Share the meal who provided 2,439 meals to those in need

FINANCIAL WELLBEING

At Tarmac, we know it is important to provide our people with access to financial support and guidance, so they feel empowered to make decisions about their future and have financial freedom to focus on their family, career and enjoying their lives. To support this, we offer a range of financial wellbeing tools and services that colleagues can access whenever they need them, helping them feel informed, confident and in control.

In 2025:

  • We ran 11 pension webinar sessions with Scottish Widows to enable employees to better understand their pensions and have the best retirement they can.
  • There were 166 cases where our EAP provider, Workplace Options, was used – 36 cases were categorised as work-life cases with 16% specifically for will and estate planning.
  • Over 2,500 employees took advantage of our Salary Finance hub to access information to support financial education and financial wellbeing, with 130 employees directed to additional financial support services and guidance.
  • Through our colleagues’ use of the YuLife app, £124,824 was earnt in YuCoin able to be spent at a range of retailers and supermarkets.
  • Tarmac Reward, our employee benefits hub, saw 18,800 orders made through the platform, delivering £122,800 of savings across a range of retailers.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING DAYS

In 2025, our Health and Wellbeing Days created meaningful opportunities for colleagues to pause, reflect and focus on their health. Across the Midlands, Agecroft and Snodland events, a total of 84 wellbeing medicals were completed, including 64 at the Midlands events alone, giving employees personalised insights into their physical health and early opportunities to follow up with their GP where needed. The onsite checks highlighted hidden risks around activity levels, body composition and cardiovascular health, helping many colleagues take proactive steps long before issues became serious.

Of equal importance were the conversations enabled by the Health and Wellbeing Days. Through workshops on mental health, sleep, stress, ageing and lifestyle, colleagues connected openly, shared experiences and supported one another. These local wellbeing days demonstrated our ongoing commitment to protecting health, promoting healthy lifestyles, and creating a workplace culture where every colleague feels valued, supported and able to thrive.

LOOKING FORWARD

Safety remains a fundamental non-negotiable priority for our business. We are committed to our goal of Zero Harm and will be launching our Focus 4 campaign where each quarter we will be focusing on one of the four areas in which significant harm occurs in our industry: entrapment, contractor management, transport and working at height. We will be commencing our safety culture assessments in 2026, aiming to have conducted an assessment at all sites by the end of 2027, to understand, support and improve safety behaviour and culture on site.

In 2026, we will expand our wellbeing medicals across our Cement and Packed Products business, supporting even more colleagues to proactively understand their health and reinforcing our commitment to promoting positive physical, mental, social and financial wellbeing.
